Little USB driver challenge
Last night I had a little battle with one of my Windows XP machines that I recently had P2V.
However for some reason there was something wrong with the USB driver,
when I open the Device Manager I saw two unknown devices both from VMware, this is very weird because I have the VMware Tools installed and it is working just fine except it couldn’t find the correct driver.
So I open the device and tried to update the driver and point it to the VMware Tools folder in the Program Files directory,
but unfortunately Windows was unable to find the correct driver
Next thing I checked are the default Windows drivers located in C:\Windows\Inf here I did a remarkable discovery because there are no USBPORT driver/ini files. Okay weird but easy to fix all I need to do is to copy them over from another Windows XP machine which is not a big deal.
After copying the files to the INF folder in Windows we should be able to install the VMware USB devices.
Open the Windows Device Manager and select one of the unknown devices and open the properties.
Once the window has opened, click on Reinstall Driver…

Select; No, not this time and click on Next.
Because I’ve copied the drivers to C:\Windows\Inf it is possible to select; Install the software automatically (Recommended) without pointing to the correct driver and click on Next.
Click on Finish to complete the installation of the VMware USB Mouse device, do the same with the VMware Virtual USB Hub.
So not really rocketsience, but if you don’t know where to look it could become a little bit frustrating
